Feeding
Most species consume organic particles found on substrate that they live on. Some build vertical tubes to extend their body and gather particles in a circle around the tube.
Water Quality Tolerance
Wide range of tolerance levels, but a relatively large proportion of Chironomidae larvae usually indicates poor environmental health and pollution. Some species are very tolerant of toxic substances and develop deformities on their mouths.
Fact
Usually 2-20mm but up to 30mm. Distinct capsule-like head with no long hairs. They have two pairs of prolegs on the end of the bottom of the body. Some species are bright red when alive, others may be white to dark green. They tend to preserve in a characteristic 'C' shape. For more photos, refer to our online gallery: tinyurl.com/whozjy7
Habitat
Found on aquatic vegetation, rocks, logs, coarse detritus and fine sediment. Different species may inhabit flowing and standing, permanent and temporary, fresh and saline, pristine and degraded habitats.
