Use front and middle pairs of legs as strong spines to hold down prey, while using beak to kill prey and suck out body fluids. Feed on a variety of invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans and snails. May feed on fish fry and tadpoles.

Habitat
Most commonly found in quiet waters with abundant vegetation, often found along with water boatmen. Other habitats include sewage lagoons, spring-fed pools, roadside ditches, stagnant pools, thermal streams and brackish waters.
