Habitat |
Found on aquatic vegetation, rocks, logs, coarse detritus and fine sediment. Different species may inhabit flowing and standing, permanent and temporary, fresh and saline, pristine and degraded habitats. |
Feeding Information |
Most species consume organic particles found on substrate that they live on. Some build vertical tubes to extend their body and gather particles in a circle around the tube. |
Water Quality Tolerance |
Wide range of tolerance levels, but a relatively large proportion of Chironomidae larvae usually indicates poor environmental health and pollution. Some species are very tolerant of toxic substances and develop deformities on their mouths. |
