Environmental Monitoring
It is generally a pollution sensitive lichen and is sensitive to fertilizng nitrogen. It is an indicator species for flouride in the environment.

Comments
This lichen was traditionally gathered in Hebrides of Scotland as a source of boiling water dyes. It was also used as a medicinal tead in southern California, India and China.
